Month
of “Morality”
(March 07 - April 03,2008) |
|
1.Month of
“Morality”(March 07 –April 03,2008)
“Morality” is
the 9th month of Peace calendar, which begins from March 07 and end
in April 03 of the present Gregorian calendar. The English word
morality has been derived from Latin “Moralitas”, the principal
meaning of which are manner, character and proper behavior. It is a
code of conduct held to be authoritative in matters of right or
wrong, whether by society, philosophy, religion and or individual
conscience |

Morality
|
|

concept of morality |
Morality ,
basically is understanding of good or bad, of right or wrong,
and of what it means to suffer not only one’s own pain but
also pain of other. This spirit of empathy and the
understanding “what hurts me would feel the same way to you”
are the cutting edge of concept of morality. How brain tackles
morality ? Scientifically , in the left brain an almond shaped
mass of gray matter known as amygdale is associated with
strong emotion like fear, empathy, love and affection etc. In
the left brain also, medial prefrontal cortex is linked with
emotion and social thinking. The damage of this part leads to
belligerent feelings |
|
|
|

cortex
|
The anterior
cingulated cortex located also in the left brain increases
activities of deficient moral dilemmas , signaling the dorsolateral
prefrontal cortex in right brain to provide executive control.
Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is associated with cold cognition and
it becomes more active when people make more utilitarian choices;
perhaps slowly and gradually lead dehumanization –a phenomena of war
like, warring , hostile , aggressive, unfriendly , antagonistic etc
exploiting morality for evil purposes |
|
|
With increasing
activation of Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, it seems today
throughout the world, morality has taken a back sheet as a result
meaning of life and society has been blurred. Morality is a
multi-dimensional concept concerning values like ethics, fairness,
goodness, honesty, ideals, integrity, justice, righteousness and
rectitude etc which according to some people are not practical and
complicated gesture learned from the books.
|

Dorsolateral
prefrontal cortex, |
|
|
|
Domination of
such negative concept of morality has drifted the human society
towards inbreeding depression, which has generated responses to
create a violent world. The ability to recognize need of others is
on the decline resulting in stratification of human society.
|
|
It is time to
arrest such a process in the era of globalization aiming to create
“one global village”. It is in this context , morality as an
ingredient of peace need to be articulated and focused addressing to
the question of “how or ought we to live” at individual, societal
and global level. The task is urgent. Time may be running out to
contribute to creation of a better world with full of happy and
peaceful regions. |

one global village |
|

peace calendar |
During 28 days
of the month of morality, we have to learn and imprint in our
minds various perspectives of morality to build adaptive
capacity for a new and peaceful world order. When such ideas
are imprinted in our mind during the month of morality, it
will influence our behavior and action throughout the 13
months of peace calendar.
|
|
|
All
religions of the world have accepted morality as Divine
command theory corresponding to divine judgment and a code of
conduct befitting to laws of universal absolutism . South
Africa is attempting to create a Moral regeneration movement ,
which is based on biblical – based moral code
|
|
|
|
Morality is also
a product of evolutionary forces founded on emotional and spiritual
instincts that were adopted in the past because they aided survival
and reproduction. Mutuality and reciprocity are the key elements of
evolutionary perspectives of morality which have supported the
process of evolution to continue. According to Neuroscientific
perspectives , the mirror –neurons have a strong role to play in
empathy which determine to great extent morality based social
behavior
. |
Neuroscientific |
|
|

right” or “wrong” |
Judicial
systems are also influenced by morality giving meaning to
“right” or “wrong” and deciding acquittal as well as grading
of punishment. In political perspectives , morality urges upon
the politicians to rise to the minimal moral level of applying
to themselves the standards they apply to others to arrest the
process of social degeneration. The politician should detach
themselves from unethical war of words to inflict negative
impulses into the human
minds
|
|
But
in reality this is vary rarely accepted as a result
cruel and violent forces including terrorism are
erupting when we shout from the top of the roof that the
stage of globalization will unify the humans as a single
homogeneous and harmonious species. In the changing
political philosophy , it is high time now to
incorporate moral principles of universality which
provide access to a level ground for human groups to
strengthen the foundation of civilized – based new world
order |

Globalization |
|
|
|
Human
communities should also discard a vary conflicted sense of “help
those close to home and ignore those far away”. This is mainly
because the plight of a person one can see will always feel more
real than the problems of someone whose suffering is merely
described through various channels and medias . In the highly
utilitarian culture of 21st century, our social brains have evolved
to recognize “welfare of your tribe is essential for your survival
whereas of an opposing tribe is not “even it might be a threat”.
|
|

Brain networks
|
The brain networks
needs to be understood to initiate a process of change for learning
the lessons of moral grammar towards social and global homogeneity
and cohesiveness. Ones such perspectives are imprinted in human
minds, standards of behaviour, responsibility and identity will
ensure harmony between individuals irrespective of cast, class,
color and nationality etc and bring about transformation to become
good people with heartful humanitarian qualities to build a
peaceful society free of violence. |
|
|

science of matter |
The basic meaning of
peace should always be adopted as security (personal, food, health,
education, livelihood and all other socio-economic determinants),
comfort with a sense of enough ness and happiness converging with
Truth, Order and Harmony |

science of
spirituality |
|
implying that
there is now urgent need to apply the integrated concept of “science
of matter” with “science of spirituality”. Collectively all such
perspectives of morality need to be adopted by each and every world
citizen and the human civilization as a whole to be at peace and to
create a peaceful environment for all others in the world. |

Human Peace Architecture(HPA) Live Project
Today in
the scientific and technological era , the visual sensory
instrument along with systematic study and analysis inspire the
people to adopt specific type of life style. It is in this
connection a live project on Peace has been designed to convince the
humanity that Peace is not abstract but it is scientific and can
take physical form with appropriate and meaningful contents to
enrich human life with the energy of peace. |

Human Architecture |
|
|
|
|
In my capacity as Professor
of Piloo Mody College of Architecture, Cuttack, Orissa , a young 10th
semester student of Architecture Mr.Amrutesh Mohanty is inspired and
motivated with the principles of Peace and Peace Technology and under
my guidance developed LIVE PROJECT ON PEACE to enlighten the
horizon of thinking of the world citizens for encouraging them to
restructure their activities incorporating Peace as an essential element
of their thought, action and products. |
|

Peace
|
Peace in our
individual, domestic , social and global life has been one of the
most desired aspects since the beginning of human civilization. Yet,
it always seems to evade us. Apart from our basic needs for
existence, peace has been one of the primary goals of all our
endeavors. Peace has also been associated with economic development
|
|
|
Without delving into
the various philosophical, spiritual and religious definitions available,
peace can be described as the state of perfect harmony in the absence of
conflict. Peace can also be described as a state of silence and serenity.
Peace has also been attributed to the absence of desire either due to
fulfillment of all, or because of contentment of the available |
|
Science we can not
detach ourselves from our own sub-consciousness,/un consciousness,
it is not apparent to analyze all that our mind desires and what may
lead to fulfillment. Improvement of quality of human life always
keeps ahead of what is available to us. Social evolution and
increasingly complex and diverse social structures generates
conflicts at a rate faster than we can abate them. In such a
scenario, the need for individual and social peace is even more
pronounced in our lives |

Social evolution |
|
|

global peace
|
There are
various scientific, technological, and spiritual as well as
philosophical ways to achieve peace from individual to global
level. At the very simplest form, defining the boundaries of one’s
desires, confronting or evading, and thus minimizing individual
conflicts are the basic traits that can be practiced at the
individual level contributing to global peace. |
|
|
In society,
peace and harmony is a collective goal that can be achieved through
inclusive participation. Even though it is an essential goal,
individual thought and attitude and responsibility are the key
requisites of success. Every individual in the society desiring
peace needs to be aware of his/her responsibility towards the
society. They needs to respect every other individual and their
views, however different they might be. The standards of individual
morality and ethics need to be constantly set at higher standards in
this society so that every individual is able to contribute to a
peaceful social environment and a peaceful world without violence . |

society |
|
|
Such a high standard
(?)of individual and social life can only be facilitated when the
human habitation has been well aligned towards this goal.
Spatial/Urban planning has ignored the incorporation of peace as an
integral component of human settlements so far because of lack of
understanding of socio-cultural structure having peace at the
nucleus of the structure and diversity that didn’t exist few decades
back. With shrinking distances, we live in a global village where
the inevitable social complexity and diversity forces us to consider
and initiated action for peace as an inseparable part of life style
basing on which the primary goals of planning and design in all
sectors of human activities including spatial/urban should be taken
up. |
|
|
Basing on the above
guiding principles the details concept of the Live Project
and the physical form of the project are placed below. It is urged
upon the humanity to build such Peace and Harmony centers not only I
their hearts but in the places (human settlements) where they live
so that they are not only inspired but continuously guided by the
energy of Peace and Harmony centers to carry out their day to day
activities for growth and prosperity with peace
|

Peace and Harmony
|
|
Introduction:
Human
civilization has evolved and progressed through many phases of
development in the course of history. With every obstacle for
survival , a new way out has been experimented but few things
remain the same for mankind i.e. the primary requirement of
life, wellbeing of body mind & soul.Man experimented various
ways to make his voyage/ journey of life smooth, easy and
fulfilling. He invented many ways of healing and safe keeping
of the mind and body, though never succeeding fully. Reason
being simple and logically related to natural process of life
with age. However, in the case of mind ,the turbulence is
obscure and unpredictable. |
The main cause
being that mankind did a lot of study on the body and tried to
understand it but never explored that deep to understand the mind.
Body is the medium for surveillance of the mind and perhaps the
reason behind its incapability to analyze and synthesize the
knowledge on its own mind even though proper co-ordination and
balance between body and mind is essential for a peaceful and
harmonious society in this turbulent world. |
|
Nonetheless, mankind
is a restless being, by nature and never satisfied. Many ventures
for the purpose of understanding and alleviating the mind has been
tested and tried since time immemorial, through meditation, yoga
practices, research labs, therapy centers, awareness programmers
etc,.
The “Peace and Harmony
Centre” goes a step further towards achieving this integral
improvement of the state of mind for spreading peace on this earth.
Such Peace and Harmony centers besides building in spaces should
also be built in human hearts and minds for ensuring their healing,
purifying and unifying processes to create ONE PEACEFUL HUMAN
FAMILY. |
|
|
Concept:
The
concept of a peace and harmony centre evolves from the present utilitarian
and violent world, where the humanitarian values like love , affection,
justice, freedom, morality, consciousness are gradually on decline. The
architect and all other professionals being parts of the society
have some duties and responsibilities to curb such state of violence. The
professional ethics not only teaches us to utilize our knowledge and power
to create a better living environment but also tells us to reform our aims
and objectives to become creatively constructive for the present and also
for the future generations.
The reasons of violent state
of affair can be numerous …the people could be…
1. The stressed urban
metro sexual human being.
2. In the confused
psychic
a. due to politics
b. due to religion/
culture
c. due to illiteracy/
superstition
d. due to poverty/
unemployment
e. due to lack of
access to physical and socio-economic resources.
3. The derailed
locked-mind
a. due to religious
confliction
b.due to social
negligence
c. due to frustration
of failure
4.the blank page
a. early age
b. later age
The so-called
‘healing, purifying and unifying’ statutory bodies of today like religious
institutions, spiritual institutions may not be able to cure them fully
and comprehensively. Because, they kill the evil by inculcating another
evil into the mind.
That’s why for all
peace achieving ventures we requires a neutral, unbiased, unaffected, and
yet flexible method. A method which should provide everything besides
preaching and teaching should also demonstrate easy adaptability.
So, the first option
for any idea to take root should be based on peace. The physical
environment, the human settlement etc are to be designed with full
security and peace including a shelter/house also; ‘A peace and harmony
centre’ can be adopted as a conceptual visual framework to promote and
inspire the human minds to restructure their activities and professions,
where there is no place of violence.
A centre where people
can identify themselves as parts of Nature and its elements. A place where
they will go through the process of real…
‘ healing, unifying
and purifying ’ to achieve the “ultimate reality” of life which is the
peace and nothing but peace. |
|
Aims and objectives
Aim of the thesis: To
build a structural peaceful environment in the midst and in harmony with
Nature to alleviate the perplexed mind for bringing balance and peace to
the troubled society.
Objectives:
· To establish peace
and harmony
· To eradicate all
evils originating from misinterpretations of religions.
· To educate mankind
to respect and develop positive approach towards other religion, culture
and beliefs, understanding the ultimate truth behind these effort-“PEACE”.
· To understand the
relationship of “Science of matter” with “Science of spirituality”.
Scope:
Build structures which
will provide therapeutic treatment for the body, mind and soul like
· Meditation Centres
· Ancient healing
therapy which are in conformity with the laws of mother Nature
· Yoga centres
· Psycho-therapy
centres
· Community centres
To achieve this,
· An outdoor environment
with a serene landscape plays an important role in captivating ,
inspiring and
soothing the fatigued body and the troubled mind.
·There can be an open
air amphitheatre workshops, seminars and awareness programmes
to
understand the complicated mind.
· Create an
environment for traditional and scientific discourses, exchange ideas
between
exports,
professionals and the common persons from various fields involving all
religious
beliefs irrespective of caste creed and colour.
· Develop and practice
a common accepted method
|
|
Limitations:
· Does not
involve intricate details of designing the supporting structures.
·
Does not give details of the usage of scientific, energy
efficient and modern technologies
to be incorporated.
· No details
of funding agents.
Scale:
· The
scale of the project structure may not be huge but simple with
technically advanced. It can be confined within 8 to 10 Acres of
land. However as landscape plays a major and vital role, the entire
project with least density structure will definitely be huge
covering 50 acres or more area of land.
·Another
justification for the structures hugeness is due to the fact that
apart from the central meditation structure the rest structures
blend with the landscaping and are horizontally planned.
Problem
Identification:
· Violent
environment with violent psychic of humanity.
· The
decaying socio-economic and political environment.
· The
destruction of eco-systems.
·
Declining humanitarian values and concern for each other.
· Absence
of Truth ,Order and Harmony in the society promoting more and more
creative destructions.
Methodology:
· Discarding the usual ways of approach, we should adopt an innovative
method of studying the present violent human environment and the
decaying ecological environment . The method should involve and
incorporate the basic constituents of peace and analyze the reasons
of increasing rate of violence including terrorism for development
of the project .
· To
search for alternate and effective peaceful methods existing in
the various religious beliefs and groups and different human
activities. Meditation, yoga, chanting mantras and prayers indeed
sooths and channelizes the physical senses to a world of infinity
and eternal peace. In addition the thinking process from the mind
should be tuned so that the responses of the mind are always
positive and peaceful. No negative impulses should be allowed to
enter the mind by perceptual zing the entry of positive energy from
the space which is in general can be realized as Absolute Energy of
consciousness(AEC).
· Adopt
and cultivate a common , simple and acceptable methods for a
disciplined mind. A disciplined mind can tame the physical self to
open up and accept the winds of change towards ‘Peace & Harmony’ in
the society.
|
|
The project
The ‘Peace and Harmony
centre’ may initially sound to many as an NGO or a govt. program to set up
a lush green garden or landscaping with some therapy-resort provisions.
But if somebody goes there and senses the design aspects and smells the
thought provoking vibes on the site, then certainly he will absorb
something to improve the state of mind.
The place may look some way
strange and extra-terrestrial if you go after the perspectives of the
whole structure. But will create the feeling of something intensely
related and co-joined with nature with a strong bonding and camouflaging
with context on a deeper introspection.
The place may
create some opportunity for the users to go deep into the vastness of the
mind and explore their own mind and its behavioral pattern so that they
can understand the problem areas and could try to bring peace to their
life. As we march fast towards a globalized human race, the peace attained
could hopefully stand a chance to extend world wide.
The project helps establishing peace in
the society by going from micro to macro. By influencing the individual
gradually the whole society will be influenced and ultimately the entire
globe.
The project is designed in a
sensitive manner taking care of all the religions, cultures, beliefs and
groups so that none of the elements of the project hurts any or get
lenient to another.
The planning is very much based on the site. It
takes care of all existing features and keeps them intact. It absorbs the
existing environment, activity and nature of the place.
It followed the contours. It
went with and around the rocks and trees. And also took all the level
differences into consideration and tried to keep it intact in most places.
The designing of the
structures is the result of careful observation of the virtual mind-path
diagrams of human mind in general. The shapes are very much inspired with
smooth flowing of spaces, which is the objective of the place to
facilitate achieving in case of mind. The forms are kept very much soft
and smooth to absorb the nature within. The landscaping is given priority
with some interesting elements. |

1. Site is divided
into 3 zones
a. Central
Meditation Structure.
It is the main
structure with the meditation facilities for a limited number of people
and it’s the tallest structure ranging upto 43 Mtr.
Its having a pyramid
on a circular base, a little sunken from ground level.
Then an ovular tall
cap of glass upon it.
The portion of pyramid
engulfed within the glass cap is also made-up of glass.
The top glass
structure has a hole in it at the top to allow a few rays of light to come
directly down and fall upon the crystal kept at the meditation core of the
pyramid.
b. The Inner Core
adjacent to Central structure.
The inner core has
only different peace plantation within it with few of the buildings
flowing into it as the cores are not very strictly defined.
c. The Outer Core
for rest of the buildings.
The outer core has all
other structures,
The structures
in these two cores are…

relaxation zone has an open platform to sit down and have the
‘nature-interaction’ experience. One can experience the first sun of
the morning from here with the river on the back drop.
Psycho-analysis
Zone
‘Manas’ the
psycho analysis zone has facilities for workshops and seminars.
This structure
is used for different awareness and analysis workshops. There they
illustrate some scientific ways to understand the mind and try to
get it into control.
Physical Therapy
Zone
‘Kaaya’ the
physical therapy centre facilitates the age old healing techniques
gathered from different corners of the world. Those processes are
used to heal the tired mind and body.
Public Utility
Area
This includes,
‘Aahar’ -The
