Politically, it has multi party election. Since May 1999 the country had a civilian constitution after 16 years of military dictatorship . The main political issues are corruption and ethnic and religious tension.

There is no compulsory military service in the country. It has contributed a significant number of forces to international peace keeping missions and since 2001 the armed forces have also been deployed to restore internal control after outbreaks of religious  conflicts in northern and central states.

Nigeria

Nigeria is one of the world’s top oil producer. The 1981 drop in world oil prices turned the country from an aid donor into a major receiver of World Bank assistance. Besides it has sizeable iron ore, bauxite, coal and tin deposits, which are beginning to be explored. Massive state of inefficiency due to over dependence on oil resources, ongoing conflicts disrupting production, low per capita income and high unit transportation cost etc are some of the major weaknesses of the country

Entrepreneurs focus on trade rather than production  has also created adverse effect on the economy. Crime rate is rising – it has one of the highest crime rates in the world. Environmentally the country is in a bad shape. It was the dumping ground for European chemical wastes. Oil industry pollution is also a major concern. Sustainability rank of the country is 133.

Educational heath systems are also not well organized. The average school living age is 12. By end of 2005  , 3.6 million people were living with HIV/AIDS.
